If you’re new to reading the Bible, the version (NLT, NIV, etc.) refers to the name of the Bible translation. Generally, there are word for word translations of the original biblical text, and there are thought for thought translations. Word for word translations include: The King James Version (KJV), the New King James Version (NKJV), and the English Standard Version (ESV). While the New Living Translation (NLT) is thought for thought. If you’d like a version in the middle, try the New International Version (NIV). While I reference many translations when writing a book and studying Scripture, I personally like to read the NKJV and NLT versions.
Here’s a sample Scripture of John 3:16 from each version so you can see the difference in wording.
For Spanish, the word for word translations include the Reina Valera Antigua (RVA), the Reina Valera 1960 (RVR 1960), and the Reina Valera Revisada (RVR 1977). The thought for thought translation is the Nueva Traducción Viviente (NTV). And the version in the middle is the Nueva Versión Internacional (NVI).
